MONROE — A shakeup has left no incumbent for a state Representative’s seat in the 12th legislative district that includes Monroe at its western edge.
State Sen. Brad Hawkins, the East Wenatchee legislator, withdrew from running again, he announced early last week. He’s instead going for a seat on Chelan’s county commission.
The boundaries of the 12th district from Monroe to Yakima were adjusted recently. Hawkins found he lived outside his own district.
Hawkins’ news of his withdrawal set off a domino effect. Republican state Rep. Keith Goehner launched a run for the Senate seat last week. He’ll face former Snoqualmie City Council member Jim Mayhew, who had announced in mid-April. The redrawn 12th added Snoqualmie into the mix.
No Snohomish County-based challengers have announced they’ve joined the fray yet.
Candidate filing week runs from May 6 to 10.
The shakeup was predicated by the state legislative map being redrawn again in March. Residents in Yakima filed a lawsuit that the district lacked local representation and a judge adjusted the lines. The adjustments were primarily along its eastern boundaries, and affected multiple districts in central Washington.
The revised 12th District’s boundaries still contain Monroe. Until a 2020 redistricting, the area was represented in the 39th District.
