MACHIAS — More than 40 members of Snohomish’s VFW Post 921 and helpers from the Snohomish Home Depot store conducted a day of service May 15 at the Machias Community Cemetery off of Silva Street under light rain conditions. The work included cutting blackberries, cleaning gravesites, weedwhacking and placing 160 flags on Veteran graves, said the Snohomish VFW’s Commander Chris Cote

Last month, the Snohomish VFW took over the care and management of the Machias Cemetery from a volunteer-led board of community members who had maintained it for 40 years. The cemetery was started in the late 1800s.

American Legion Post 181 in Lake Stevens will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at the cemetery.
