Last Fourth with fireworks allowed in Snohomish
SNOHOMISH — This Fourth of July is the last year people can legally use fireworks within city limits.
In March, the City Council voted 6-1 to set a ban that begins in 2026. The ban was created without a vote of the people.
Snohomish allows fireworks use July 4 between 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. If you use them, discharge them responsibly.
Metalwork exhibition honors Phil Baldwin
Danaca Design Gallery in Seattle, in collaboration with the Seattle Metals Guild, is presenting a curated exhibition of 30 artists’ work honoring deceased Snohomish metalsmith Phil Baldwin’s life, legacy, and influential role in reviving mokume-gane, a traditional Japanese metalworking technique, in the U.S. The exhibition runs June 20 to July 31. The gallery is at 5619 University Way NE, Seattle.
Survey for Snohomish at-home businesses
SNOHOMISH — The city is asking for opinions from at-home business owners toward its plan to update city regulations later this year. The city says the future updates will make it easier to run an at-home business.
The city posted an online survey that is available until Sunday, July 27 at www.polco.us/s5xmr2 that asks if square footage limits in the current code affect your business among other questions.
Monroe Wendy’s under construction
MONROE — Work has begun to build the Wendy’s restaurant in the Fred Meyer parking lot along U.S. 2.
County’s Health Dept. director appointed to lead state health agency
On June 9, Gov. Bob Ferguson selected Snohomish County Health Department director Dennis Worsham as the state’s Secretary of Health. Worsham starts July 7, taking the post formally after Dr. Umair Shah retired in January. The agency is currently led by an acting director.
Worsham has 32 years under his belt. Early on, he worked in Snohomish County in health education. Later in his career, he had been the Deputy Secretary for Health at the state Department of Health from 2014-2016, then went to King County for COVID prevention efforts, then led the Snohomish County Health Department from 2023 onward after Shawn Frederick chose to step down.
Shah was one of a few state agency leaders under Gov. Jay Inslee who retired from their posts when Inslee ended his term. Ferguson appointed Jessica Todorovich, a longtime Department of Health manager, as the agency’s acting director.
Next Glacier Peak High principal comes from Archbishop Murphy H.S.
SNOHOMISH — Alicia Mitchell will head up Glacier Peak High School starting July 1. She’s trading red for blue: Mitchell is the principal of Archbishop Murphy High School, and had started there in 2019. Prior to that she was an assistant principal in Sammamish.
Glacier Peak’s current principal Brenda Conrad had announced her resignation in March.
Other administration hires at Snohomish Schools include:
• Kevin Rohrich will be a new assistant principal at Snohomish High School. He comes from Mukilteo Schools and is taking over a retiring assistant principal’s position.
• Valley View Middle School teacher Shareene Mossburg will become an assistant principal at Riverview Elementary.
• Angela Morrison will enter the district as an assistant principal at Cathcart Elementary.
At Home store chain eyes bankruptcy- update: it filed for bankruptcy
EVERETT — At Home, a fast-growing home goods store which planned to open at the Everett Mall, is eyeing bankruptcy, the Wall Street Journal reports. A couple of years ago, At Home and Ulta Beauty had signed leases to move into the parts of the former Sears building, which also houses a Trader Joe’s. Earlier this year, the mall was still talking about At Home still planning to be opening.
Representatives for Everett Mall owners Brixton Capital did not give an answer by press time if the lease is still active.
