Historical facts on Blackman Lake docks clarified, and new deck is dangerous

BLACKMAN LAKE DOCK

To the Editor:
Michael Whitney incorrectly stated “The Snohomish Sportsman’s Club and the old Snohomish Tillicum Kiwanis Club fundraised and helped install both docks.” (“Closed Snohomish fishing dock also to get new decking in fixes,” May 28 Tribune).
The two clubs built the pier, and both floating docks on the lake, one at the boat launch and one at Hill Park, as well as the two picnic shelters at Hill Park. The city later replaced the two floating docks with metal docks, and put new roofs on the picnic shelters. The pier was built with donations, except for the pilings which were purchased by the Snohomish Sportsman’s Association. The original cost for the pier was $10,000 for the pilings, all other materials and labor were provided by the clubs. The Snohomish Sportsman’s Association maintained the pier, making repairs as needed and replacing the benches on the pier several times when they were vandalized.
The repairs to the pier seem to be finished. If so, as it stands today, it is unsafe for small children and handicapped people as the waist-high railing that formerly enclosed the pier is missing, except at the very end of the pier, and there are no benches, a feature that the old pier had for the convenience of the anglers, and were built by the Sportsman’s Association.
