Snohomish County Tribune
wins regional journalism awards

This photo (below) by freelance Tribune photojournalist Doug Ramsay of the Cascade-Everett girls basketball game won first place for sports photography in the monthly National Press Photographers Association's three-state Region 11 competition in December.
Ramsay found out in May and was shocked. His photo beat a Seattle Post-Intelligencer shot of the Seattle Seahawks.

Doug Ramsay's award-winning photo of the Cascade-Everett basketball game, published Dec. 11, 2013
The award judges said: “The two top winners in the sports category were superb moments of action coverage. (Ramsay’s photo) showed grit and determination on the face of all four basketball players.”
Winning entries are put in the running for the monthly national competition, and earn the journalist points toward the regional Photographer of the Year award.

Meanwhile, Tribune editor Michael Whitney won third place in May in the five-state Society of Professional Journalists Region 10 annual contest in the government and politics reporting category for nondaily newspapers for an article on former Everett School Board member Jessica Olson’s deliberate habit of missing meetings despite being an elected official, and reporting her defense on why she felt so voiceless that, to her, there was no reason to show up.
The SPJ contest covered articles and media published or broadcast during 2013.
