Snohomish’s weather predictor hops into town Feb. 2
SNOHOMISH - Come to the eighth annual GroundFrog Day in Snohomish Saturday, Feb. 2 for a ribbiting good time.
What is GroundFrog Day? A farcical and fun adventure, whose aim is to both curtail those pesky winter doldrums and offer a venue for community activities. Why trust that shadowy fur ball, Punxsutawney Phil, when we have Snohomish Slew — the Pacific Northwest’s only amphibian meteorologist and his end of winter prediction.
The GroundFrog’s full name is actually Snohomish Slew, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Frognosticator of Prognosticators and Weather Prophet Extraordinary. Slew is named for the sloughs on the Snohomish River where his ancestor settled. Snohomish Slew’s frognostications have been featured on numerous regional and national TV and radio stations. The event is growing by leaps and bounds.
Only the Frognosticator Snohomish Slew can ribbit the impending meteorological fate of the region. Should the community brace for six more weeks of foggy, soggy and wet or should the community look forward to an early spring with skies of gray, moist and breezy? (After all, this is the Pacific Northwest).
Festivities begin at 11 a.m. at the gazebo area at First Street and Avenue A in downtown Snohomish.
Activities include Slew’s arrival (in the past, Slew has arrived via fire truck and limousine, complete with his secret service “bouncers”). Who knows how he’ll make his entrance this year. Slew will be assisted by Community Transit’s Super Hero OxyGene, a crowd favorite, and both Lilly and Tad, Slew’s cousins from Kla Ha Ya Days. There is a pre-emptive coloring contest for kids. Coloring sheets and instructions are available at Entries should be delivered to Brava’s Pizza and Pasta, 120 Glen Ave. There will be a jump rope contest, songs and frog painting (wooden frogs, of course).
