Snohomish Fire District 4 former Fire Chief Mark Collins and his wife, Nancy, visit with guests during a retirement party for him Wednesday, Jan. 2. Collins retired last week after 31 years with the fire district. Just over 100 guests attended the event at the district’s headquarters at Station 43. Collins was hired as a firefighter in June 1981 and became chief in 2005. Deputy Chief Ron Simmons will take over as the interim chief until fire commissioners make a decision on a permanent chief.

Two participants move quickly to get out of the water during the 37th annual Polar Bear Plunge into the Pilchuck River on New Year’s Day. An estimated 250 people participated this year as the air temperature hovered around the 31-degree mark. While most of those who ventured into the water just walked out a few feet from shore, a few dove all the way in or waded to the other side.
