Remembering fallen firefighter
REMEMBERING GARY PARKS — Kathy Parks, the widow of Everett firefighter Gary Parks, sets flowers on his memorial site during an event marking the 25th anniversary of his death held at Everett Community College Thursday, Feb. 16. Her daughters Jennifer Parks (center) and Erin Van Ry stand behind their mother as they wait to place their flowers. Parks, who was an 18-year veteran of the Everett Fire Department, died in a fire on Feb. 16, 1987, which destroyed the college’s library. While the fire was determined to have been set by an arsonist, it is still unsolved. Relatives of Parks, along with firefighters and police officers from throughout Snohomish County, filled the college auditorium to listen to former college president Bob Drewel, Everett Fire Chief Murray Gordon, retired Everett fire captain Ken Dammand and Parks' daughter, Erin, speak. At the end of the ceremony, flowers were laid by those attending on a memorial for Parks in the center of the college’s courtyard near where the library stood.
